What Is ADHD?

“When people think about attention deficit disorder (ADHD), they usually consider it a childhood problem. However, a large proportion — between 30 and 70 percent — of children with the condition remain affected throughout adulthood.” Ben Martin, Psy.D said. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a kind of mental health condition that causes a person to behave impulsively, have difficulties in paying attention, and become extremely hyperactive. ADHD is present in both children and adults. It also has a couple of apparent symptoms that can easily be spotted.

 What Causes ADHD?

“Your environment, both your social and natural surroundings, can greatly impact how you feel.” says Marjie L. Roddick, MA, NCC, LMHC. While the root of ADHD is still unclear, a research study showed that there are a couple of possible factors that may cause a person to have it. One of the most plausible links they found is that it could be hereditary.  The environment can also affect its development and also one of the sources of getting the disorder.

 Types Of ADHD

There are three distinct types of ADHD, and they are as follows:

  • Predominantly Inattentive
  • People who are suffering from this kind of ADHD mostly suffer from their inability to pay attention, follow instructions, and finish tasks without getting distracted. This type of ADHD is the most difficult to diagnose on kids because they are naturally inattentive. That’s why many researchers believe most children who have ADHD don’t get the help they deserve.

  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive
  • Kids and adults who are suffering from this display erratic and hyperactive behaviors. They almost always make the wrong decisions, they do things that can potentially be harmful to them, they fidget a lot, and they can’t sit still in one place for a long time.

  • Combined
  • People with this kind of ADHD display symptoms of the first two types. It is also the type of ADHD that is easiest to recognize because all of the usual symptoms are present.
